Founded in 1991, GERMEN — a company of the Better Foods Group — is one of the largest cereal milling companies in Portugal. Its origins stem from the merger of Companhia Aveirense de Moagens, Sociedade Fomento Industrial, and, since 1997, Sociedade Industrial Vila Franca.

Germen is the Better Foods Group brand offering flour solutions ranging from traditional to innovative, including rice flour, spelt flour, baby-food flours, and gluten-free flour preparations.

Germen holds some of the most prestigious certifications in the food sector.

Certifications and protocols

Germen, like the other manufacturing units of the Group, holds renowned food-sector certifications such as BRCGS Food Safety, Kosher, and Halal.

In addition, it is the Group’s only unit with an exclusive production line dedicated to gluten-free flours, certified under BRCGS Gluten-Free and bearing the seal of the Portuguese Celiac Association.

The unit also operates a wheat flour production line using cereals from the Alentejo region, developed in partnership with ANPOC and certified by CERTIS.

Internal laboratory and experimental bakery

Germen is home to the Better Foods Group’s internal laboratory, which complies with all Quality and Food Safety requirements and standards. Incoming cereals and finished flours are tested daily.

The Better Foods Group also operates an experimental bakery, shared by all group units, including Germen, and fully compliant with Quality and Food Safety requirements and standards.

Hundreds of loaves are baked every day to ensure that only fully compliant, high-quality products reach our customers.
